How to stake SUPRA tokens

Staking SUPRA means delegating it to a validator. Your tokens stay in the staking pool under your own address, the validator does the work of producing blocks, and your share of the rewards is added to your stake every epoch. This page walks through it on the StarKey extension and on a phone, and covers the two numbers that catch people out: the 2 SUPRA minimum and the SUPRA you have to leave liquid for the transaction itself.

Before you start

You need StarKey, the browser extension on a desktop or the StarKey app on a phone, and SUPRA in it. Nothing else: there is no separate staking dashboard to sign up for, and no token approval step.

Budget 4 SUPRA in the wallet before you begin. Two of those are the smallest stake the pool will take, and the other two have to stay liquid while the transaction runs, for the reason in what it costs below. Stake more than the minimum and the arithmetic is the same: whatever you stake, keep 2 SUPRA back.

Staking on a desktop, with the StarKey extension

  1. Install the StarKey extension and open it, then make sure it is on Supra Mainnet.
  2. Go to the stake form on futurameridian.com and press Connect Wallet. StarKey asks you to approve the connection; approve it and the form fills in your balance.
  3. Type the amount of SUPRA you want to stake, or press Max. Max stakes your balance less a 4 SUPRA reserve. See why Max leaves 4 SUPRA.
  4. Read the confirm step. It states the fee for this exact transaction, the operator commission, and when the stake starts earning. The fee is measured by simulating your transaction against the chain first.
  5. Press Stake and sign in StarKey.
  6. Wait for the panel to update. It usually lands in about a second and a half, and the position band then shows the SUPRA as STAKED.

Staking on a phone, with Open in StarKey

A phone browser cannot see a wallet extension. On a phone the form offers Open in StarKey, which hands the page to StarKey’s own in-app browser, where the wallet is present and signing works normally.

  1. Install the StarKey app and fund it with SUPRA.
  2. Open futurameridian.com in your phone’s browser and tap Open in StarKey. The page reopens inside StarKey.
  3. Tap Connect Wallet and approve.
  4. Enter the amount, or tap Max.
  5. Check the confirm step, tap Stake, and sign.

The whole flow has been run on chain from an iPhone, inside StarKey, on this exact form.

What it costs

Supra charges gas at a fixed price, and the stake transaction is cheap: real add_stake calls against this pool have used up to 929 gas units, which is about 0.93 SUPRA. Most of that is not spent at all. It is a storage deposit, held while your delegation exists and returned to you when you withdraw or cancel. The form says so on the confirm step.

The 2 SUPRA you have to leave liquid is a different thing again. Before the chain runs your transaction it reserves the ceiling, the most gas the transaction is allowed to use, from your wallet. This form sets that ceiling at 2000 units, so the network wants 2 SUPRA available at the moment you sign, even though it only charges for what is actually used and gives the rest straight back. Try to stake every last token and the transaction is rejected before it starts.

Why Max leaves 4 SUPRA behind

Because getting out costs gas too.

Unstaking through this site is two transactions: an unlock, then a withdraw, each reserving its own ceiling up front, up to 2 SUPRA and up to 1 SUPRA. Max leaves 4 SUPRA so that both of them clear with room to spare. A delegator who staked down to the last token would have no liquid SUPRA left to pay for their own exit.

If you unstake through StarKey’s own staking screen instead, its transactions may set different ceilings and want more. The 4 SUPRA reserve is calibrated for the exit through this site.

When your stake starts earning

At the next epoch, which is at most two hours away. Supra pays every epoch, and on mainnet an epoch is currently two hours long. The form reads that interval from the chain.

From then on there is nothing to claim and nothing to manage. Rewards are added to your stake each epoch and start earning themselves, so the position compounds twelve times a day. The operator commission is 38.72%. The network sets it, and the 8% the form estimates with is already net of it.

For what that adds up to, and how the estimate is worked out, see SUPRA staking rewards.

After you have staked

The panel shows your position as three cells, STAKED, UNLOCKING and READY TO WITHDRAW, with your earning rate underneath. Amounts are shown to two decimal places; hover or hold one to see all eight.

You can add to your stake at any time, and you can start unstaking at any time. There is no minimum term. See how to unstake SUPRA for what the exit looks like, including how to cancel one before it completes.
